Contenuto

Between 1917 and 1981, 22 Irishmen died on hunger strike. It was adopted as a protest of last resort by Republicans in the early 20th century. The deaths of Thomas Ashe in 1917 and Toms MacSwiney in 1920 further hardened attitudes. While many Irish lay their deaths at the door of Perfidious Albion, Irish governments proved just as ruthless when faced with this form of protest. Not just a portrait of those who died, this book explores the political circumstances of the strikes, the pressures the strikers encountered, and the suffering of their family and friends.
